WHAT IS CTNI?
CTNI is a Filipino company with a vision to be a leader in the propagation of genetically superior trees which will:
- Improve the quality, wood volume and value of our forest trees that, in turn, will greatly increase income of tree growers;
- Help the Philippine wood processing industries meet the demand for their products in the domestic and export markets;
- Contribute to the renewal and sustainable management of Philippine forests.
CTNI is cloning fast-growing commercial tree species derived from superior mother trees. The species being cloned now are: Gmelina arborea (Gmelina), Acacia mangium (Mangium), Eucalyptus deglupta (Bagras), and Paraserianthes falcataria (Falcata), but other tree species may be cloned should there be a reasonable demand.
WHAT IS A CLONE?
A clone is a genetic copy of the original individual. Cloning superior trees produces genetic duplicates that will grow and perform like the original trees when planted in a similar environment. Tree plantations raised from clones will have only the better-performing trees unlike plantations raised from seeds wherein poor, average, and good trees can be mixed in unpredictable proportions.
HOW WILL CLONE SEEDLINGS FROM CTNI INCREASE YOUR PROFITS?
Bigger Wood Volumes In Less Time
Being true-to-type, clones of excellent mother trees will perform like the original mother trees. Clone seedlings of CTNI will grow taller, have bigger diameter, and therefore yield bigger volume per hectare than the usual seedlings grown from seeds. Moreover, the clone seedlings grow fast that the waiting time to attain the desired range of diameter sizes of the harvestable trees can be reduced by two to three years compared to trees grown from seeds.
WHERE DO CTNI CLONES COME FROM?
The clones of CTNI originated from superior trees that were extensively searched, and rigorously identified in private tree plantations, in reforestation areas, and in natural forests. Trees that passed strict screenings were marked as mother trees; they were then climbed in order to get the right vegetative materials that are needed in the first stage of cloning work at the CTNI nursery.
The first rounds of clones went through rejuvenation, after which, they were planted, cared for and managed as clonal hedges in the Ramet Multiplication Garden of CTNI.
Today, CTNI has thousands of these superior tree clones in its Ramet Garden; and from them, more clones can be produced for both large and small-scale plantations. For Falcata, clones come from a transitory Ramet Garden stocked with the most vigorous nursery-grown seedlings from the seeds of superior mother trees. At CTNI, the clones of each tree species come from a sufficient number of different original mother trees.
